Movies We Love: The Way Way Back

So, my hubby and I wanted to see this movie for a while. Once we finally got around to it, it was a GREAT movie.
If anyone is looking for an interesting coming-of-age, independent film, this is the one you need to see. It’s a rooting-for-the-underdog kind of movie. It’s got a great story line, really funny, heartwarming, and it shows the bond between mother and son.

I won’t give the whole plot away, but The Way Way Back is about a socially awkward boy named Duncan who is trying to get used to his mom’s new boyfriend Trent and his daughter Steph. They decide to all vacation in Cape Cod for the summer. Their next door neighbors for the summer are a funny family. The mother, Betty, likes to drink just a little too much, the son, Peter, has a lazy eye that Betty makes fun of, and the daughter, Susanna, is friends with Steph, who eventually befriends Duncan.
Duncan and Trent have a clash of personalities, even though Duncan is just trying to protect his mom from another heartbreak. Duncan can’t handle the ridiculousness of the adults, so he disappears during the day (every day) to get away from them. Eventually, he winds up at a water park called Water Wizz, and gets taken under the wing of the owner, Owen.
I’ll let you see the rest of the movie and you can judge for yourself.

It’s got an all-star cast: Steve Carrell, Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Anna Sophia Robb, Rob Corddry, Amanda Peet, Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolf, and Liam James.

I hope y’all take me up on this. It’s truly brilliant!

  1. Nice post! I did thoroughly enjoy The Way, Way Back when I saw it in theaters, but I haven’t had the chance to re-watch it quite yet. Sam Rockwell was great in this!
